Hotspots on the Mexican Riviera

Known for its bo-ho chic boutiques, sun filled lazy beach days and spicy tacos the Mexican Riviera is full of color and flavour for a traveler. A combination of 5 star accommodation, historical and archaeological ruins and loads of cenotes known as underwater caves, you will not be short on options when planning your getaway. With fall slowly upon us it is natural to crave a little more sunshine, especially if you detest the cold. While many enjoy the winter wonderland that winter brings the Mexican Riviera provides a sunny getaway with lots to do. Riviera Maya is not limited in options, there are plenty of hotels, restaurants, sights and shops that are awaiting your arrival as you make your way down the Riviera. So here are the WKNDTRP recommended hotspots along the way

You have to visit Tulum

The coastal city of Tulum is definitely a hotspot on the map, filled with some of the calmest beaches, extravagant accommodation, historical and archeological sights from when it was a buzzing coastal city during the time of the Mayans. If you are in Tulum we highly recommend Azulik Resort-

Secluded from the rest, this resort is an adults only hotel that provides a private beach for swimming and sun bathing. Combined with being a wellness resort as well, Azulik Resort is that step away from reality. Their cabanas are made from Mexican royal ebony featuring high ceiling and plenty of natural light. Here the vibe is Boho and chill ideal if you ever want to just leave your stresses back home. Embrace silence and dive into an array of traditional Mexican dishes at their restaurant.

Dive into a cenotes

Some natural attractions are so unique it is a must try when visiting, for the Mexican Riviera it is their Cenotes. How these came to be are quite interesting too, with the entire Yucatan Peninsula being built on porous limestone over time the water has craved its way through the rocks, creating deep tunnels and opening that are now rock pools and underwater caves. The Mayans believed that this was the gateway to the Underworld, making these caves so much more mysterious and worth the dive. They can be found right along the Riviera, but some of the most common are Cenote Dos Ojos Tulum, Grand Cenote Tulum and Cenote Ik Kil Chichen Itza. Most of the Cenote have changing rooms and even restaurants nearby.

Eat well in Playa del Carmen

No trip is complete without indulging in the ethnic cuisine, so if you are looking for great food and a view a WKNDTRP recommended restaurant is Cocina de Autor at the Grand Velas Hotel. They serve an exceptional menu combining Mexican and Caribbean cuisine using only the finest and best sourced ingredients. The restaurant is usually open for dinner so it is the best way to conclude your day on the Riviera.

However, if you are feeling a little groovy Kool beach club is a hop skip away. The beach club has an outdoor restaurant serving an array of cocktails and sides, groovy tunes and of course a white sandy beach. The Kool Beach club is great for adults and kids so you can guarantee that everyone will be entertained

Combine water and history

Cancun is another hotspot along the way. Other than Cancun’s all-inclusive hotels the Underwater Museum is a place you should consider a visit. With a goal of creating artificial reefs and ocean awareness the museum takes you on a journey on marine restoration. While you are in Cancun be sure to stop by at Coco Bongo for a night of your life with acrobatics, musical tributes and lots of dancing.

Shop in Mexico

A mix of traditional and luxury, the Mexican Riviera provides plenty of shopping. Select between the luxury brands on 5th Avenue in Playa del Carmen or go local at the boutiques selling handicrafts, souvenirs and artefacts.
